Recipe- Cold and Flu Remedy

Oxymel of Garlic

This recipe makes a delicious salad dressing as well as an effective medicine. The quantities aren’t critical, you can adjust any of them according to your tastes and needs.

Take a teaspoon or dessertspoon doses as necessary for sore throats, colds, flu etc.


30gm (about 10 cloves) of garlic bulb (Allium satium)

4gm (1heaped tsp) fennel seeds (Foerniculum vulgare)

4gm (1 heaped tsp) caraway seeds (Carum carvi)

100ml apple cider vinegar

40ml (about 2tblsp) honey (Manuka honey or equivalent)


Method 1 (for mild garlic taste and mild medicinal effect)

Gently warm seeds in vinegar without boiling for a few minutes. Remove from heat. Add the crushed garlic.

Strain and add honey.  Place in jar and administer as per required or as directed by your practitioner.


Method 2 (for stronger taste and medicinal effect)

Gently warm seeds in vinegar without boiling for a few minutes, then strain. Add honey and warm to combine.

Place crushed garlic in a jar, Pour the warm honey and vinegar mix over the garlic and steep.


Interactions and precautions:

Garlic stimulates the immune system so, therefore, contraindicated in patients taking immunosuppressants.

Patients with bleeding abnormalities should avoid high doses of garlic. Although usual dietary intakes of garlic are likely to be safe prior to major surgery, suspend the use of high dose garlic 1 week prior to surgery, as there is a theoretical increased risk of bleeding.

High doses of garlic are not recommended during the 1st trimester of pregnancy until safety can be confirmed.

End Note:

Oxymels are unlikely to go off as both honey and vinegar have preservative quantities. Considering garlic’s antimicrobial action, a garlic oxymel is highly unlikely to go off. But, allicin (the active ingredient in garlic) is only active for 72hrs after being activated when crushed it is recommended to use to oxymel with this time frame.

Schisandra chinensis is a versatile herb that works its best magic as a liver herb and as an adaptogen. Schisandra triggers sour receptors in the mouth, which kicks the gall bladder into life, which is especially beneficial for Biliary detoxification.
Additionally, Schisandra is hepatic protective along with having potent effects for improving phase 2 liver detoxification. These actions are especially beneficial for patients with Hepatitis C as Schisandra also has an anti-hep C activity.
Schisandra was known as the 1st Russian adaptogen (Helps the body adapt to stress) after being used by the indigenous tribes of northern Siberia, to assist with their endurance, stamina and survival during periods of hunting.
In the 50s and 60s it was used in mental conditions, such as depression. Plus, it was used to boost immunity, low platelet counts and improve mental performance, especially mental performance in people struggling with skilled, repetitive performance work.
